Yes Nido keeps for long trails. I'm using it and it's been packaged since February, no problems. I vacuumed pack it with the Food Saver.

Yes, butter will last for a decent amount of time in your cupboard. What I meant is that milk powder can have a shelf-life of 2+ years if it remains unopened and in a foil package or tightly sealed tin. Once opened, it might begin to go stale after a couple months.

Back to the original example, if a container of Nestle Nido is opened, I probably wouldn't keep it for the following season, especially as it has a higher fat content so it will go bad quicker. I would want to use it within one camping season.

The Milkman powdered milk on the other hand you only ever use what you need at a time, and the remaining packets will stay fresh for a very long time. Additionally, the foil pouches won't absorb any flavors (ie. sweaty clothes) while in your backpack that you might if you were using plastic bags to portion out something from a bigger container.

Yes, whey powder can go stale like anything but you needn't worry too much. Unopened it is good for a year or two, and once opened and in a typical plastic container if you use it up within a few months you will be unlikely to notice any difference.

Rex — Will Nido stay good repackaged for a thru-hike, stored for five months in a friend's garage, shipped across country, stored in post office for another week, then carried down the trail in your backpack for another week?

I have often packaged Nido in trail meals that have sat around for over a year without any problem.

The only thing that Nido seems to counteract with and go bad, at least for me, is when I mix it with Nestle Carnation Instant Breakfast packets. For some reason after about three or four days it just goes horrible wrong and tastes nasty. So, for when I want to drink the Nestle Carnation Instant Breakfast packets I just add in some nido out of a ziplock into the instant breakfast.

Thanks, Joey. I have been discarding any unused portion at the end of each season, just to be safe, but it is good to hear it from someone who actually knows what they are talking about.
