Can anyone tell me:
1. The real volume of these pack (I saw some reports the AK70 was smaller than its nominal capacity; saw an aether 70 last weekend on the trail so am confident that would be large enough for me)
2. What they might be like with 15 to 18kg to carry?

I have one of the Aether 70s. Mine is probably 5-6 years old, and weighs just under 5 lbs empty. I use it for my "winter" pack, when I'm carrying more and/or bigger stuff. I've carried it before w/ 35-40 lbs of total weight a few times.
The pack itself handles it well, meaning that the frame isn't buckling, fabric sags or other stress points, etc.
There's nothing fun about carrying a 40 pound pack, but if you're going to do it, the aether 70 will handle it.
