I've had the same Soto micro regulator stove for several years now (I bought it the year it came out…2010??) and used it quite a bit. Then I discovered Zelph's starlyte and a caldera cone set up last spring or so and haven't really used the soto since (except on the JMT last year). And it's been sitting in my tupperware odd-gear-storage-bin under my bed ever since.

Time to bring it back out for my JMT this August…is there anything I need to check, or do, or ??? to make sure it will last that whole month? Is that anything I need to even worry about? The piezo still works, but I'll bring a spare lighter (obviously) just in case. But as far as the stove portion of it…any reason not to trust it?

you may want to check the gasket that seals the stove to the canister. Most are rubber and though not common it can dry out and crack. easiest way is the screw it together. Mix up some slightly soapy water and run a little of the water around the seal. If you see it blowing bubbles it needs replacing, otherwise you should be good.

Yes, the only problem i have ever had with modern canister stoves was a dried, cracked O-ring. I would do a quick inspection, but really just give it a test and you should be good to go.

I am curious which starlyte / caldera combo you are using.

my soto from 2010 developed a problem last summer… for no apparent reason it started sputtering/pulsing flame. That did not seem to affect the cooking time or fuel use much. My guess was that some contaminated fuel got into the innards causing the problem. Problem is you can not clean the innards like with a needle valve canister stove. At that point I didn't want to take a chance on the stove on a backpack trip so I retired it. Got an email address here on bpl and emailed the Soto rep thinking I would sent it in for cleaning/repair…. they guy sent me a NEW stove at no charge !!!

Hi Jen

You can't clean the needle valve on a SOTO.
You may be able to clean the jet – not sure.
You can check the BS011 O-ring that seals to the canister. If damaged, replace with Viton for preference, or nitrile.

Cheers
PS: check Bic lighter …

hey all – thanks for the insight. I was just wondering if I needed to get a new stove, they aren't THAT expensive, but obviously I'd rather not if I didn't have to. This one seems fine, so I'll just keep on keepin' on….

Terry, I use the modified starlyte from Zelph with both a 600mL and a 900mL short/wide evernew pot with associated ti-tri cones. I have the whole set up for the 900mL (the wood burning insert, etc) but found I just didn't use it that much. My 600 is my go-to set up these days. The whole thing fits in the pot…even my fuel bottle can be rolled up in the cone and put inside the pot, with the stove, my lighter, a simmer ring (if i want it), lighter, measuring cup…that set up is good for about 4-5 days for me.
