Hi,

I'm thinking about switching to a quilt, and also upgrading my pad and pack at the same time. Original plan was a quilt with a regular NeoAir XLite. Then I got to thinking that I could use a torso length (small) XLite, and get a torso length CCF pad that would double as a backing for my (new) frameless pack and a lower body pad for sleeping. I could also use the CCF for a sitting pad. I currently use an old torso length thermarest and put my pack under my legs, and I find it comfortable enough.

Anyone think this type of set up is problematic with a quilt? I am currently thinking of going with the Katabatic Pallisade 30. The intended use will be 3 season backpacking in the western US, mostly the Sierra and the Cascades. My current set up is a thermarest pro, a 30 degree bag, and a solo mid with a bug liner, and it keeps me comfortable at high elevations in the Sierra.

Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions.

I did this exact setup last year and ultimately was unhappy with it. The quilt aspect was great, no issues there with the torso length pad. The problem I had was the drop off from the end of the xlite to the lower supplemental pad system. Wasn't very comfy (for me). I've since switched to a Klymit Inertia XL that I scored direct from Klymit on ebay for super cheap and cut it down to Inertia X Wave size, and couldn't be happier with that. The "body mapping" is far more comfortable for me (was never happy with the xlite regardless if it was torso or full size) and the drop off isn't really noticeable to the 3/4" pad I use for my legs.

You may be fine with the xlite though. I'm 6'4" and pretty broad, so even with my short stint using a large xlite I was unhappy with the comfort and the high drop of my elbows to the ground. I'm golden with a 1.5" pad though, especially in torso size. If I flail off the sides of it, I don't feel like I'm falling off a ledge.

That's a great point about the 3" drop off – I hadn't thought of that at all. The drop off is definitely a little annoying with my current 1.5" thermarest, but bearable. I'm glad you guys pointed that out.

What about drafts with the quilt? Any problem with warmth with the shorter pad?

"What about drafts with the quilt? Any problem with warmth with the shorter pad?"

None. Footbox and snaps go up to the torso pad region for me (EE RevX & Enigma).
