I was interested in this pack but didn't know what size to buy so I got a cheap 46 Litre Hornet and I'm impressed but it's about 500 grams lighter than the Exos so i've effectively bypassed the Exos in weight. I always try to buy lighter than what I have by about half so I'd be looking at something like the MLD Burn for my next pack because I've discovered I don't need a large volume pack and the problem with more volume is, you put more stuff in it which equals unnecessary weight.
I'm not sure if this applies to the Exos but I bought the large pack because I'm tall but not slim and I've got no adjustment left on the hip belt so I'll need to pad the belt, very odd.
Lots of people seem to like these packs, just make sure to try one on before purchasing if you can.
I say this as a word of caution because, in my experience, almost every properly sized Osprey pack I've ever tried on has fit me well… except the Exos line.
There is just something different about that trampoline suspension that doesn't suit my body. The lumbar area is particularly problematic for me.
This pack might fit you very well, just be sure to try it on and see, if you haven't already, because the suspension system is certainly fairly unique.
I have a new large Exos 58 (I am 6'1", 205lbs) and it fits me perfectly. Incredibly light for all the features it has. The back webbing that keeps the pack off your back actually works incredibly well, when I bought the pack I figured it would just be a gimmick, but after a few trips, feeling a nice breeze across my back is great.
I bought a circuit but should have bought the exos…..way more features!!
Agree with Derek – I have great fit where the pack rides really well on my back with a lot of Osprey packs, but not with the Exos. A friend of mine loves his. Try it on or make sure you will be able to return it at a minor shipping fee.
I hated the fit of the older Exos, but my initial feelings on the 2014 model fit are extremely positive.
I have an Exos; also an Atmos and Stratos. All have the Airscape suspension system (the "trampoline"); all fit great; and I am crazy about the system.
It's much, much cooler than an unsuspended pack; distributes weight very well; handles awkward movement when scrambling, bushwhacking, etc.; has more bells and whistled than yu really need; and stands up to my abuse.
True, they're a litel heavier than some of the other options out there, but other than the Zpacks Arc Blast, I can't imagine a pack that would lure me away…
Just my 2ยข… HYOH, YMMV, ETC.
I just bought one (2014 version) and wore it the first time on a 15 mile weekend up and down White Rock Mountain with my sons.
I had a total load of about 28 lbs with the extra food and water for the boys in it and was very impressed with the way it carried the load.
I usually carry my Blaze AC60 when I take the boys along. It does a wonderful job with 20-35 lbs. in it. The Exos carried just as well, is a tad lighter, and has the pockets and large top pocket that the Blaze is missing for organization. I can take or leave pockets on a pack. But, they were useful and didn't make the weight of the pack any heavier than the Blaze.
Long-term, there may be issues with the lightweight buckles and compression cord locks. The Blaze has much sturdier systems on it. However, for its weight, the Exos is truly an impressive pack. The way it carries with 25+ lbs in it was just a dream. It is too early to tell if the hip belt will continue to support such heavy loads without softening up and rolling. So far, so good though. With Osprey's lifetime warranty, you really can't lose in the long run.
The trampoline system does impact the way you have to pack it. But, not anything too troublesome, if you have reasonably light/compact gear like most of us do. I found the comfort and air flow that was provided to be worth the impact on the main compartment. There's no way you're fitting a bear can in this thing horizontally though. I didn't try it vertically yet. I guess we'll see when I pack for the Rockies this fall.
I have this years large Exos 58. I have no complaints and it felt GREAT the entire 3 days used with 30lbs. I actually like everything about it. Unfortunately, I cannot compare it to the others you mentioned.
I am 5' 9" and 145 lbs. That's a lean build and the medium was a wonderful fit for me. Anything less than a 32-34" waist line might be pushing it a bit. Plenty of room to go larger with the medium belt. My torso is 19".
Seems to be nothing but good things said about this pack. Thanks for sharing guys!
I loved almost everything a about this pack, especially the backpanel and the straps. But, I just couldn't get a great fit. The waist belt for the medium seemed smaller than most other packs, and the long torso was just too damn long. If you're lucky enough to get a good fit with the Exos, it's definitely a strong choice.
