Hey all,
I may be asking for the impossible here, but does anyone know of a way to get a custom sun hoody made using the phase SL fabric that Arcteryx has?
It may be proprietary stuff….
I already sent Arcteryx a message, and they said they don't do custom orders.

Custom sun hoody with Phase SL fabric?

wow that would be nice
Not sure I understand why you'd want one. A hoody is a LOT warmer than a sun hat, due to lack of chimney ventilation, and the whole point of using phase SL fabric is to keep cool in warm temperatures. Hoodies only make sense, imo, when you need them to add warmth. Not sure I understand the concept of a 'sun hoody'.
Sounds silly…but I hate wearing wide brimmed hats, hence the hoody. I've always stuck with a baseball cap.
Maybe I should get over that….because you're right, that's a tried and proven solution.
I wear a snapback ball cap because I've been unable to find any other hat that fits my head well. I like being able to flip up the hood when needed and flip it down when not.
A wide brimmed hat doesn't protect you when the sun is at a low angle.
Mostly I use a buff ninja style with the ball cap.
Depends how bad you want it. I found a Camo LS T for fishing, but alas, was it not made as a hoody. So I bought two, and cut up one, built a hood, and added it to the other.
But for most of my high temperature hiking I wear a Patagonia Tropical Sun Hood , like on the JMT in August. It works for me. In the past I've tried caps with "sun drapes" and wide brimmed hats, and found them lacking in some way or another.
The best thing to do is to work your way through the solutions to see what works for you.
And if anyone comes up with a Phase SL LS Hoody – I'm on it. Dead Bird or not.

You could always buy an additional article of clothing made from the fabric and cannibalize it to make the hood for the shirt you want to convert…
Patagonia makes similar sun hoodies. I think that's the best you're going to get, but- Wait!
There's an entire industry that is almost completely vanished. A tailor or seamstress should be able to sew you a sun hoody if you bring them fabric!
These are ok, and the material is very similar to the Phase SL fabric:

It is a matter of taste, of course, but the color choices are a little pukey, IMO. Why not just plain white? Just the name of the one I have, "Oyster", makes me a little queasy.
But otherwise they are nice – no complaints. To paraphrase Frank Loyd Wright – "if you are wearing it, at least you don't have to look at it".
I agree that a hood traps too much heat and I prefer a somewhat modular system. I cut the bottom off a mesh fabric base layer and sewed a short length of elastic bungee between the ends so it sits above the brim of a light OR baseball cap and hangs down to protect my ears and neck. That way I can wear it with whatever top I want, including a short sleeve with SPF 70 on my arms. I used it extensively on my last spring ski tour where the sun was especially brutal: Splitboarding Across Kodiak Island

UPF 15 protection – something is better than nothing, but by Australian standards only UPF >20 qualifies as “sun protection”
