Thanks for the head's up. I missed it, but that's the price the tent SHOULD be IMO. So maybe this tent will be coming down to more reasonable levels soon.
Hey! The Hubba NX popped on REI for $250.
I've seen a number of negative reviews, so I'm feeling plenty of cognitive dissonance for ordering (not the least of which is handing Jerry Brown $20 for the privilege of buying a tent). However I can't get past these things:
1) I really like my green/brown Hubba; it's one of my favorite pieces of kit; could the NX really be worse?
2) The thing I like the least on my current Hubba are the low cut sides, which allows some wind ingress, and I inevitably camp in wind. The NX has higher solid sides. Do want.
3) MSR has greatly increased the space between the tent and the fly all around, for reduced condensation. Never had major condensation problems but that's a nice upgrade.
4) The Hubba is heavy at 3 lbs for lightweight packing. The NX improves that a little; closer to 2.5 lbs. Still no lightweight but significantly better.
5) The green fly was great for stealth camping. Sure was gloomy on the inside tho. I think the off-white fly will be an upgrade. Why o why did they have to splash the NX with red, though?
If you don't mind a question, why do you prefer the NX over the 2014 weight reduced Copper Spur? I have seen it on sale for $30 more and it seems to have more space and less weight.
It's a good question. The Copper Spur UL1 looks a little better on paper does it not:
Copper Spur UL1 is "trail weight" of 2 lb 3 oz. Floor 22 sq ft.
Hubba NX is "trail weight" of 2 lb 7 oz, another +4 oz. Floor 18 sq ft, so -4 sq ft.
Somewhere I'd gotten the impression the Hubba's lower front and back sides (by head and foot) were more vertical. Wait: Here it is. "…the Copper Spur’s side walls really squeeze inward, reducing some of that space, and in my opinion, despite what the listed specs say, I feel like there is more room inside the Carbon Reflex. The side walls on the Carbon Reflex are actually completely vertical, with no squeeze…"
Don't know the denier of the BA tent. Quote from Ken: "The reps at Big Agnes stated the fly is 15 denier and the floor is 20 denier." Hubba is 20-d fly and 30-d floor (and 20-d canopy). So the Hubba appears to be made of a heavier fabric, which is probably how it gains its +4 oz. Typical MSR build philosophy, they always go a little heavier; it seems they're never the lightest.
I think I'd be happy with either.
EDIT: Researching this a bit more, found this quote from Samuel F: "the Big Agnes Copper Spur solo tent is also bigger than the NX, and even lighter. The compromise is with Big Agnes' less waterproof coatings on the fabric."
Thanks, I'm always looking for a deal on a free standing tent to use as a backup/loaner alternative to my Notch. These are two that I look at, so its useful to hear about the reality vs paper.
As an anecdote for any future researchers, i just had my Hubba Hubba NX out in hurricane Arthur. It was very windy and torrential downpoured for at least 12 hours straight with normal rain a day before and after. The ground around the tent had about 1/4-1/2" of standing water. Not a single drop inside the tent either through the rain fly or tent floor. I was quite impressed!
