Questions about putting some eVent fabric onto Cuben MLD SoloMid for venting

The other thing is, you can't relate emissivity to anything practical. Measuring a simulated torso gives more directly useful values.

If there's a 10 F temp difference across boundary layer with regular fabric, and 30 F with foil, then that foil will allow you to sleep at a 20 F colder temperature.

This is if you cover yourself with foil, but I think that having a foil tent liner will give about the same result.

A tent may require 10 square yards? maybe 1 ounce per square yard for reflective cuben, so 10 extra ounces.

If I have a 3 square yard quilt and add 1 ounce per square yard of down, that will give me about the same 20 F colder comfort temperature, for 3 extra ounces.

So, better to just use a little warmer quilt than have a reflective liner.

Maybe you have more accurate numbers than my back of envelope calculations. Maybe the foil liner will provide more warmth. If you had a tent made of reflective cuben then there'de be no extra weight for a liner.

I mostly agree with this, but sometimes you want to not have a quilt on you, and still be sheltered, or at least i do. I also have an eye on the future..

Yeah, but there might be something said for a partial double wall and a layer of trapped air, as far as also increasing warmth. Again, in the context of just body heat, probably not such a big deal, but add another extra heat source, might make enough of a difference?

What if you get snowed in somewhere, and have to take shelter, yeah you can lay in your bag most of the day and night, but wouldn't the option to be not as confined/constricted and warm enough be nice, like sitting up reading, playing cards or what not?

MLD solomid doesn't use a lot of material. 2 yards of liner won't be ideal, but it should cover the top half where most of the heat is rising towards the apex anyways.

Dunno, there is also a subjective aspect to this. I really enjoy the semi psychedelic light show of flickering candles under highly reflective surfaces–it's beautiful and entrancing. An extra 2.7 oz of weight won't break my back, even though i know intellectually putting extra 2.7 oz of down in my quilt is more efficient for sleeping warmer…

I know, Jerry, was just teasing you a bit. I appreciate the feedback i get from you and other engineer, super left brain types here, helps to keep me grounded, which i need at times. Also, sometimes my knowledge and experience base has gaps that need filling in.
