Hi folks,

Anyone have experience with these cheap, 190T Terylene, ponchos?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/321261790152?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

There about $20 on ebay.

I wouldn't expect breathable, and given the grommets, that much durability, but at 7 ounces and cheap…

In any case, I'm looking for an affordable poncho, VERY WATERPROOF, somewhat durable and light. Doesn't need to be the lightest, but certainly under a pound (which rules out otherwise perfect PVC ponchos). I wouldn't use it as a shelter, but wouldn't mind having it as an extra tarp for group areas of camp or an awning for my tent, or maybe a ground cloth, or maybe an extra trap over the tent in a prolonged downpour.

My thinking here is that I usually just hike with a fleece in light rain, but I'd like a solution, especially when stopped, for prolonged hard rain when my current rain shell just wets out.

Thoughts?

Did you see the gear deals, Sierra Deigns Poncho for sale? It was about 15 dollars at Woot. I don't know if it's on sale anymore though.

Probably quite similar to the ebay poncho. Terylene is polyester, and i'm assuming they are using a urethane coating. Sierra Designs poncho also uses polyester and i think a urethane coating. The latter is a bit heavier at 10 ounces.

I just bought two of the Sierra Designs Poncho's, but i'm thinking of making my own hybrid eVent-silnylon poncho. If that sale isn't going on anymore, and i decide to make my own, i would be willing to sell you a poncho for the same sale price i got it for plus a couple of dollars for shipping (so 17). One is completely unused and the other was briefly tested for 10 mins out in the front yard–i would send you the unused one. You will get it a lot faster than the one from Hong Kong. I can't say for sure, but i think the Sierra Designs one is a bit bigger, which might account for the weight difference.

Thanks,

That's close to what I'm looking for, but pack coverage would also be a bonus. In any case, there are several on ebay for about the same price, so I'll likely just try one out. There's a cape model with an extended back for a pack for $15 and 10oz, so worth a shot anyway.

My primary frustration is with my rain jacket and silnylon wetting out, so poly sounds good. I'm not worried about breathability, but rather just something warm, again, mostly whle stationary or easy hiking in the cold rain.

If it's raining hard, I won't be doing tough hiking or bushwhacking or climbing, so seeing my feet is irrelevant. Dry while fishing though is a must!

When I don't bring my poncho tarp I use a vinyl one I got for $5 at REI. It also weighs 7oz I believe.

Has been plenty durable and waterproof in my experience.
