I've been exclusively an "east side" backpacker, but will be doing the High Sierra Trail in July from the west side, finishing at our parked car at Whitney Portal. A friend is shuttling us over from the east side on a one day trip for her. I would prefer taking a relaxed drive over the day before, picking up the permit, and being dropped off somewhere near the trailhead, but I can't find any info on walk-in campgrounds near any of the trailheads that connect to the HST. Any ideas? Our other option is driving over really early on the first hiking day. Thanks!
