On the trail today, I saw the first notices for a total fire ban in all National Forests in Arizona.

No campfires, no charcoal grilling, no smoking outside, no fireworks. Did not specifically mention alcohol or Esbit stoves, but the ban is quite broad, and would seem to include them in spirit, if not in words. Naturally, when the trail passed a campground, I could smell smoke, but that might have been covered in the Exceptions.

Exceptions for fires in established cement FS fire rings/grills in developed areas, or where you have cleared a 5-foot radius of burnable debris.

Unless the fires danger is really bad, like later in summer, there is usually a distinction between car campsites and backcountry camping. They usually allow car campgrounds to have wood/charcoal fires, around here at least.

Well, the fire danger is getting really bad. It's getting to be time to stay out of fire prone areas. Scuba diving, anyone?
