Howdy,

Considering the Four Pass Loop in CO June 18th this year. Will all passes likely still be snowed in? Crampons and ice axe required? How technical are the passes when snowed in?

Thanks,
D.

I have had my eye on that route as well. Unfortunately, I cannot give you accurate snow data.

Good Luck!

It's really too early to make an assessment about what June 18 will look like, too much weather between now and then to accurately say. What is a fact is that Snowpack is well above average this year in that part of the state and June 18 in a normal snow year is a bit early. I would expect significant snow. An Ice Axe would be recommended but crampon's may not work well except early morning. Once the sun hits the snow it will soften quickly at that time of year and have a wet/slushy consistency. I would check with the White River National Forest ranger station @ 970-319-2670 a little closer to your date to get an accurate update.
