Anybody used either of these shoes for some serious trips? Both seem to be pretty similar in terms of features, with the exception of the XTComp having that "exo-skeleton" that I can't imagine is really doing much more to support your for than the MTN Gecko. Both are breathable mesh uppers, with the XT being a bit more… meshy. Having recently had toe surgery I am looking for something with a little extra support, so the super light trail runners with no rock protection just don't cut it, but I want something a little lighter than my Lowa Renegade mids. They are both around 12oz, and have a rock "plates", and reasonable protected toe boxes (the XTComp a bit more so I think).

Just wanted to get some opinions before I buy. Thanks! :)

I did a yo-yo hike of the final section of the PCT last year in the mtn gecko shoes……128 miles. The shoes breathed great and the sole was comfortable. My only problem was a slight sharp pain in the heal. I dont know what caused it, because the shoe was smooth on the inside. A week later the pain was gone. When I pulled the Geckos out and put them back on……there was the heal pain. Something in that heal was hitting a nerve. I really want to like the shoe, but…..

I ended up ordering a pair of the XTComps. Figured between the two, that would be a little more comfortable in the hot summer weather here in AZ. They haven't arrived yet, but I'll check back in with my initial impressions.

I hope that heel pain issue was just you, that would be a major issue with my foot problems. One of the things I liked about this shoe was the no-lift heel, which compels you to walk on the ball of your foot a bit more and is better on your knees. Although I would imagine if you're not used to that and still hitting your heels when you walk it might hurt a bit. I'll have to do a few short local hikes in them before I take then on any major ventures. Thanks for the heads up!

Brandon,,
I am a heel walker, so maybe that was the problem? I don't know. The Mtn Gecko had a sole sorta similar to a Keen shoe. I like a little harder sole vs. a trail running shoe. I ended up giving the shoes to Goodwill.
Golite makes my favorite walking around town shoe called the Dart. Actually they stopped producing it. For me the sole was to soft for trail hiking, but general walking is comfortable.
