Great article!!

I think it is the same in day-to-day life. Many people are great at one thing, which usually is their job. Gone are the days that most people could fix their car, make home repairs, build a house, etc., etc.

Reminds me of the classic Heinlein quote:

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Mags' site is one of my favorites. A lot of common sense stuff and a guy who enjoys a plethora of outdoors activities.

hehe so true. especially shown when the NOBO's get to NH and get confused when there aren't blazes in wilderness areas and trails actually have names not just the AT.

i always suggest they get the white mountains map that shows all the trails and which are the AT ;) NOBO's do go south for a bit, so it's tricky.
