I am wondering – and I cannot test myself until June 5 when I again have a yard – but how might I use my Werner kayak paddle (two piece, 210 cm I think, carbon blades, Alum. shafts) to support my duomid? I have a kayaking trip coming up that will involve two nights out on Tomales bay. I think i want the space of the duo mid (though a free-standing dome sounds good too) but I cannot remember having seen one setup this way. Is the blade strong/rigid enough? Which end goes in the sand? Lots of pics out there of wooden paddles, but if you hvae experience in this area (paddle overnights are not my usual undertaking) I'd love some enlightenment.

The DuoMid requires 54" when pitched tight to the ground. If you want it off the ground for ventilation, you need more. If you want to move the bottom of the pole away from center for more "living space", you need more.
Half a paddle would be 105 cm. 105 cm/2.54 = 41.33"
Even if you're comfortable stuffing the blade into the cone at the top, you would need a pole jack. (a blade in the top would stress things in all the wrong ways)
Or, you could lash the two halves together to get 54" to 60". I would suggest blades in the middle, open tube at the ends.
Something like this might work –

Thanks, Greg. Great idea. It looks like I'll be able to use my gators (kidding). WHat is that? Anyway, you're correct. I just need to source some caps to cover the shaft ends. That should not be too tough. Perhaps some cord with split, Y-shaped ends with bowline loops would bit over the paddle corners and then I could just use velcro straps to lash them together. If only I'd thought of this. Will let you know how it goes.
Thank Dale W.
