I have a 9-day solo backpack trip this summer, and I am concerned about being out of touch with back home for that long. Not for me to communicate with them so much as for me to be able to hear from them — aging parents, a child, I just feel the need to be able to receive messages "just in case."

But I am also hoping not to spend many hundreds, even thousands, of dollars for a device and subscription service for something I don't need the other 51 weeks of the year. I've seen rentals on DeLorme and sat phone devices but not sure what is the best approach (and cost) for my needs. Is rental the best way for me to go? And if so, which type of device and company to rent from? Interested in any/all advice. FYI, I carry a PLB that I could leave behind for this trip if the rental serves as a reliable SOS device. Thanks!

This is the only rentable satellite messager I have come across.

To find details on renting one go to the "Get it Now" page. It is $65 for 2 weeks or $90 for 4. I haven't tried it myself but was considering renting one for a longer hike this summer. I have read some reviews and it seems like a solid product. It weighs in at 6.5 ounces.

If you do end up renting one I would love to hear your impressions.

“Mobal.com has the clearest, least expensive rental agreements I have found (and I have tried a number of companies over the past 9 years of trips). We’ll spend about $160.00 for a ten day rental, $12.00 per day(including shipping both ways), and $42.00 to insure the phone for the rental period. A satellite phone retails for about $1000.00 so the insurance is a good idea.”

There is also a table summarizing the costs of 5 sat phone providers

I would not rent the Briartek Cerberlink again:

You can rent the Yellowbrick 3:

Great ideas all, thank you. I've googled "rent delorme inreach" and "rent satellite phone", and found plenty of vendors, but don't know anything about reliability, best rates, best terms for my needs, etc. I have some good homework to do coming from this.
