Looking for some suggestions for an early September trip in the northern Rockies. Buddies and I do an annual "big trip" of 8-10 days and this year that's where we want to be.

We went through all the planning and steps to get a Glacier NP permit. Finally got notice last week and we're not very pleased with the itinerary so we're looking elsewhere. I put a lot of hours into planning for GNP, so I'm back to square one and just looking for somewhere to start. The part of Yellowstone we were going to use as a backup is closed to overnight backpacking that time of year. Sawtooths? Selway-Bitterroot? Bob Marshall?

3-4 guys. Strong backpackers, but not going for 30 mile days or speed records or anything like that. Good fishing is preferred. Big views. Wildlife. All the things that make a trip a "life list" kind of trip.

Any suggestions on where to start digging is appreciated!

The Bob fits your criteria well. Start at Benchmark, go over Stadler Pass, down Danaher Creek, down the South Fork, up the White River, over Larch Hill Pass, back below the Chinese Wall to the beginning. Excellent fishing. Plenty of good places (lower Youngs Creek, Haystack Mtn) to explore with dayhikes.

If Yellowstone is still an option, a big U going around Yellowstone Lake starting at the 9 Mile TH, getting into the Bechler, and ending at Old Faithful would fulfill all your criteria. The Bechler is particular fishes great in early autumn.

Thanks for the suggestions, Dave. I was hoping you would chime in!

I'll dig into those routes and see how they look. Very much appreciated.
