As a father of 2, plus a spouse who doesn’t carry much, I got into UL several years ago in order to make hiking more enjoyable for all, and it gave me a way to lighten my load while taking most of the needs for a family with young children. When hiking with family, UL gear stores smaller so I can carry more.

With all the choices of gear, doesn’t a UL philosophy save money and weight in the long run due to dual use equipment and equipment that can we used across seasons more easily. Ex. High quality, 1 person down top bag, can be used as a blanket for two in cooler to warmer months, esp if one is child. Also, one man UL tent for 2 children with adults under tarp works great. Tarp used as eating canopy is very helpful when raining. Keeps spouse and kids from getting too uncomfortable.

High quality gear is more expensive upfront, but in my opinion the functionality saves in the long run.

One of the big unexpected benefits is UL makes and teaches family to think and plan more. This increases the fun leading up to the trip as well as creates thoughtful conversation as to why you need what you want to bring and how needed is it. Of course, there is always room for toys, stuffed animals and a couple books, as well as goodies:)

Am I alone in thinking this, or is cost savings evened out by cheaper heavier gear?

Chuck,
Love your comments. The bottom line is that you are carrying less weight…thus, you are a happier hiker. The expense is somewhat justifiable, though normally UL is more costly upfront (as long as you are buying, not making your gear). However, UL does not always mean Ultra-expensive (UE). Watch for sales online as well as in your local gear shops. Normally you can save about 50% off list price if you are willing to buy year old UL gear. And it doesn’t hurt to ask “Santa” for some of the latest UL gear. Or, you can do like a friend of mine does…he buys the gear he wants, then gives it to his wife to gift wrap for him on Christmas Day. You see, even Santa can give himself a gift.

Merry Christmas!
