I just got my email from Go-Lite about the Gore-Tex jacket. I have been waiting for the return of their sold out 2.5 layer Gore-Tex rain shell. The email said that the jacket was now in stock but clicking on the link the new jacket, while 2.5 layers is not Gore-Tex. In fact now they don't offer any Gore-Tex products. I wonder if Gore-Tex had a problem with Go-Lite or vice versa.

At the beginning of Winter I contacted Go-Lite to see if they had some more coming. They said that Go-lite is out of Colorado and they had an extra rainy season so they sold out. It seems there may have been another reason.

They may have had too many returns on the Gore-Tex since it's guaranteed for life. Or maybe Gore-Tex was getting too many returns due to Go-Lites craftsmanship. I know the 2.5 layer Gore-Tex Packlite material is not like the Gore-Tex Pro but maybe it didn't meet other peoples expectations. Maybe they couldn't keep offering that Gore-Tex jacket for so cheep.

Whatever the reason, I was very excited about Go-Lite offering the Gore-Tex Packlite material but now it looks like I waited all this time for nothing. I now have to find another option.

A lot of companies are moving to proprietary or generic fabrics and membranes. I am sure there are many reasons, but I would guess cost is the greatest. Having another companies branded product on your product cuts into the bottom line.

Too bad Golite only offers their own 2.5 layer WPB fabric. I have had great experiences with Paclite, specifically with an old MH Typhoon and Patagonia supercell, both kept me bone dry in days on end downpours in Alaska, and I'm talking about 100 hours of non-stop rain.

Im not sure how good golites warranty is

But in general i would be hesitant of any proprietary fabric that didnt have a stellar warranty

The additional gore guarantee alone might be worth it for some people as you get an addional recourse

Delamination and failure of rain jackets is one of the more common gear failures

Or just buy from MEC or OR

I would suggest not to check out MEC for anything if you're looking for Gore-Tex Paclite material. I couldn't find any Gore Pac except the more expensive and heavier, $225.00 Kokatat jacket.

I wish I could remember the price and weight on that old Paclite, which Go-Lite offered because I know it was amazing but, no thanks on the Kokatat.

This reminds me of a couple years ago, when Go-lite took away the Shangri-La shell(which luckily I have) and replaced it with the complete tent.

MEC offers their own alpine shells, and gore pro, etc …

i would have no hesitation buying from MEC with their no questions asked unlimited warranty

it depends whats more important … paclite, or the entire jacket itself

I have a Cabela's "Rainy River" GTX PacLite rain suit and it has held up well for 7 years of occasional use, some of it for days at a time. Good design, very good quality and excellent guarantee. (Like REI's old guarantee.)

Howsomever… I much prefer REI's Kimtah eVent rain suit for a bit more money. It's much more breathable.
