Can anyone tell me what the long term durability is like with the msr mini groundhogs?
I have a few of them and I'm concerned about the heads acting as a weak point and breaking off.

I havge seen photos of broken heads. Don't know what sort of abuse they had suffered.

Cheers

Well that sucks. I bought them from REI so if they end up falling apart on me I could return them.

I'm not gentle when it comes to stakes.

When necessary, I use a rock to pound them in, and haven't bent a head yet.

YMMV.

I too am rough on my stakes.

In my experience, the minis are not long enough.

I've had minis come out of the ground in some strong winds.

I prefer the normal ground hogs. Although they are a little heavier, I have seldom had them come out of the ground.

I've had mine for about a year. I did bend one, at the notch in the neck you're thinking about, and admit that I did it using a rock. Probably had more to do with the user than the stake.

I haven't had any of the heads actually break off, though.

I know they have their limits. My current set up is for my 8×10 tarp, 5 grommets on each side. In low or no wind I use 6 mini groundhogs for the corner and center guy out points. If expecting wind I carry 4 groundhogs and 6 mini groundhogs. The regular groundhogs secure the corners which I really don't want pulling out.

Should work out ok I think.
