Wasn't sure where to put this post…more like "repurpose your own gear" rather than make it.

I hike in a very breathable baseball style cap. Needed to rain-proof it. Several recommendations here on BPL said "Get a shower cap." Found a shower cap today at Target. Heavy, for what it was. Was about to buy it when I noticed a bag of Cover Mate Stretch to Fit Food Covers. These plastic covers have a rubber band around the circumference and are 0.2 oz each. The "red" fits me well, but there is also a larger "gold" and a smaller "blue" in the kit. They're even microwaveable, in case I'm wearing one when the aliens invade.

I use the plastic cap that they use in beauty shops when giving a permanent (I don't remember what they're actually called). They're much lighter than shower caps and cheap (something like $3 for a bag of 50 of them). I found them in the hair care section at Walmart.

Durability isn't so good; but who cares when they're so light and cheap!

David would you mind weighing one (or several) of your disposable plastic caps? I'm going to bet they're lighter than the food covers I found. I weighed four of mine and that came to 0.8, so, 0.2 each. But these seem pretty durable, and they are intended for multi-use, not single-use.

After weighing them, they're actually quite similar in weight — about 0.15 ounces each.

They were Adama brand plastic caps. It was a 15-pack and cost was a whopping $0.94 for the pack. Here's the link to them:

As to durability, I've only recently started using them and I haven't worn one out yet. But I do think they'd shred pretty quickly when bushwhacking.

Delmar, you bear a strong resemblance to my cousin, Reflectix…

Wow, and I thought MY bald head was shiny!!

This might be great for my bicycle seat when I leave it out all night on my work commutes this summer.
