Just got a gift from my dad who found this in a NYC thrift shop. From 5 minutes of googling I can't quite figure out if I just got a diamond in the rough or a cheap beater tent for my daughter's future backyard adventures. Anyone here have confidence in ID'ing the model/vintage? Thanks in advance for any info, pics are here:

If it's a Moss, you might find you've got yourself a little collector's item. I've got a Moss Odyssey, which I've seen sell on ebay for between $600 and $1200 depending on condition this past year. Moss was bought out by MSR, and there are some people out there that will pay more than what the tents cost new to have them now.

Thanks for the heads up Dena. If that's the case, this tent might be going to her college fund and not the backyard.

There are 3 versions (I think…) of that tent.
Two made in Camden, Maine (the label should say so) and one made in Seattle.
It came out in 1983 and was sold till at least 1993.
Yours , I think, is the first version , if I understand correctly the second version had an extended red floor "bathtub" style.

To a collector the Camden made one are more valuable.
One of the Olympic was sold, well used but working , here at BPL for $65 (!) in 2010 but they now sell for between $500 and $800 , apparently even more in Japan.

BTW, the above photos are not from the OP's tent…

I sold a good number of Moss Tents right before & during the MSR acquisition.

I, too, have a few of them, as well as a couple of the wings. If I ever have the heart to depart with them, i hope to cover a little of the kids' tuition.

They are the epitomy of beautiful design, and impeccable workmanship. Although heavy, they were far better that any other tents we sold at REI, in the opinions of many of us back then.

That being said, the label (on the fly, notably) has the appearance of the mid 90's model, right before they left for Seattle. I believe the fly label before that version was more of a silkscreen.

There is a shop up in Camden which still repairs Moss tents. I'm sure the guys in there will help you out.

Definitely an Olympic, though. The sales vary on those models. The last one sold on eBay went for $260, whereas an even older Moss Encore went for $1,654.

Good luck with it. It's a great find!

Looks like I owe pops a nice father's day present, or at least reimburse him the "Abraham" he spent on the tent. I just wish my next door neighbor was a wealthy Japanese vintage gear collector.

I still have a Moss Little Dipper made in Camden which was the most bombproof tent I've ever owned.

If memory serves me, that company had a double guarantee which is almost unheard of. It was both guaranteed for life and the company would buy it back from you any time you weren't satisfied with it.
