As the title says I'm looking to buy a Montbell or Western Mountaineering Down Parka, because of my proximity I can't try these on before buying so I thought I would ask those of you with experience for some help in the sizing and any other suggestions.
I'm a touch over 6'2" and weigh around 215lb, I would mostly want to use this with a base layer only but occasionally a light mid layer also. I would also like to use it within my sleeping system.

I really feel the cold and was leaning toward the Montbell Alpine Light, but am open to suggestions for something similar. I want a hood with a full length zip and would like to keep the jacket to no more than 15.8oz. Price can be up to $300 or so?
I hope I've given enough info, if not I'm sure you'll let me know, thank you for your help.

montbell sizes a bit small, athletic "asian" fit. I would say you'd fit into an XL just right with them. Western stuff you may have to size up a little, there stuff fits a little short on me and I'm only 5'11. Also for the price/warmth, the alpine light is fantastic. I'm not sure how warm you're looking for, but another jacket id consider looking at would be the feathered friends daybreak jacket.

I am not familiar with FF sizing though.

Danny,

I agree with Allen that MontBell has an athletic fit. However its down jackets have sleeves long enough to accommodate my 36.5 inch sleeve length. I'd go XL with them. You can read my reviews of four different MB jackets at BackpackGearTest.org.

Other options include Western Mountaineering [no experience with their jackets], Feathered Friends [size smaller than MB, go XXL], Patagonia [accurate sizing]. If your budget allows consider Nunatak, which will custom fit you. If you don't need a hood you could persuade me to sell a Kobak I bought on the Gear Swap here.

Keep us posted.

I hope it adds a bit of peace of mind: I agree that you need an XL.

I'm just under your height and weigh 185 and wear a Large. I can wear a light/mid layer underneath. If you like clothing to be loose fitting, a XXL is in order for you, but will probably be a bit big.

I have a UL down inner parka and Alpine Light and like both. The Alpine Light is, as you'd expect, a good bit warmer.

Ok you've got my interest up Richard :-) what is a Kobak? I just googled and found nothing?

Good reviews, thanks.

Well I'm glad I posted here before purchasing, I was certain I would need a Large like all other jackets I own.

The Feathered Friends Daybreak looks very nice also.

Just got this jacket and used it over the weekend in rain/wind. Worked great. the hodd is relatively snug fitting but not binding. I'm 6'2" plus and weigh about 195 and got the large. Fits me well over LW base layer and under rain jacket. Feathered Friends gear is very well made and this jacket appears to be true to form. Less than 10 ounces and less than $300.

I, also am your size (little bigger — 6'3" 225lbs). I have owned the alpine light, FF daybreak as well as the FF hyperion. Short of no hood (they can, of course, custom make one with a hood) the hyperion is BY FAR my favorite jacket out of that line up and the xl fits me spot on. I would definitely not get and xxl in the FF stuff at your size. The XL Montbell fit fine if not a little baggy even…

Again, the hyperion is a super warm, super light (11 oz with 4.7 of that being fill) jacket.

Thanks Janos I like the look of the Hyperion, what temps have you used it down to and what layering did you have underneath. How did the XL size sit on you, loose, fitted etc….?

Cheers

Danny
