Just wanted to give a shout to one of my fav pieces of gear…the long fleece beanie. Its super soft and comfy. And gives me the versatility to roll up for double layer over my ears or roll down over my face not only for face/neck warmth but to shade early morning light. I sleep somewhat warm so ive never had the need for a down hood/balaclava so the beanie+R1 work great.

… and it is made by….. ?
… and is called a … ?
… and can be found …. ?
Mine is an old generic brand one.. but they can be found if you look.
..here's one i found in 30 sec
http://www.amazon.com/Turtle-Fur-Peak-Polartec-Fleece/dp/B00E4B4JHG
but im sure you could find them cheap at a thrift store or target/kmart type store..
I had one (REI store brand)used for sleep, rolled up, or rolled down over the ears – very versatile. Eventually it's been so burned by campfire (always get the pyromaniacs when I go out in a group, I just replaced it with an R1 balacava. We will see how it works but always on the lookout for a replacement beanie in subdued colors.
Costco seems to always have fleece balaclavas in stock for 5-8 bucks depending on the season. I've been using these for going on 3 years now, and they're great. Lots of configurations, warm, and comfy. One of the very few items I don't weigh.
Pretty easy to make one
Fleece is usually stretchier in one direction – make sure that goes around your head
Make two straight sides with rounded top. Before you cut it off, try it on. If it's too loose, sew a seam further in, until it fits good. Then cut off about 1/4" from seam.
I was kinda with Greg on this in that I didn't know if this was a specific product or brand you were referring to, or just an extended length fleece beanie. I had tried searching for "long fleece beanie", but found nothing referred to as that.
Thanks for clarifying, I like a long fleece beanie as well, although I have been using a Smartwool Training beanie in the warmer months because it works particularly well when hiking, and can be worn under a hat for added warmth (and I got a killer deal on a closeout). That being said, I prefer the long fleece for colder seasons and for sleeping. I happened to pick up a long fleece beanie about 3 weeks ago in a thrift store.
