this has just been a time coming. I think we are going to an UL tent.

After joining this forum a few months ago I was a traditional backpacker. My wife and I hiked pictured rocks last summer (first time for her, first time in a while for me). My pack at the start of the trip was probably a good 40 pounds. with probably 20 pounds of BW. I didn't mind, we went slow and enjoyed the beautiful view. It was great!

Now, my current gear list is about 13 pounds (more work to be done with this) with a few things to hash out. And the gear grams website is good in illustrating how much weight I have and what takes up the most weight. With that said!

I think I'm going to return our REI Quarter Dome 3 (newest edition) tent and get a non free standing structure though tarp tent.com. I really like some of their products and the innovation and options there are having a tent like that.

With that said. I need some input. I'm looking at the two person tents but am concerned about width. I use a LW exped and my wife uses a REI flash sleeping pad (coupled together) thats 45 inches wide.

I like the double rainbow but am concerned with the 50 inches width to fit two people comfortably.

i could go something like the cloudburst but that might be more space than we need.

HELP the UL tent conundrum!!!

Do either of you guys use trekking poles? If so have you considered the Stratospire 2?

Tarptents are fantastic shelters, combining protection with low weight. Just make sure you know what you want in a couples shelter before buying though. I have a Tarptent for solo which isn't as confining as a regular tent, with adjustable panels to let in breeze or shut in the direction of a storm … but if the wind shifts at night, with my quilt it can get a little drafty unless I wake up and adjust the end panels. Got to be good with the trade-offs (though minuscule).

Add: same thing with UL shelter floors … down for max ventilation but up for protection against running water on the ground with a corresponding gain or loss in floor area – they are adjustable but you need to make the call when to adjust.

Here are video reviews of the TT double rainbow and the six moon deigns lunar duo before forum member Wallace and his wife set out for their AT hike , it shows the amount of room inside each . They ended up choosing the lunar duo because it was so much more spacious . This is not to steer you towards any tent but to give you an idea of space

I've been really impressed with the design. There will always be trade offs, but if you're willing to sacrifice freestanding, then I think the SS2 fits nicely.

thanks anna for the videos that double rainbow is a lot smaller than i thought it would be whew!

We are looking for a double walled tent atm.

but the SS2 looks good. the floor can be lowered so it can widen to 62,

I am concerned of the useable space at the head and foot sections of the tent.

I had a golite SL3 and sold it b/c i didn't like the inability to control the fly touching the nest. It seemed no matter how i set it up the fly was touching on a wall or so. That bothered me a lot.

I was wondering if anyone who has an SS2 can verify the nest fly relationship.

The effective ceiling height on the SS2 is impressive even at the "short" corners.

If you are going with the 62" floor option, the fly is pretty far from the nest, Otherwise it's close, but doesn't seem to be an issue to me.

I imagine Franco fill be by at some point to add to this.

i saw his video and am impressed. I like the options to set the tent up high or low for ventilation, and the fly/nest adjustment to expand the floor.

You might want to take a look at the SMD Lunar Duo as well. I recently purchased it during a sale and I am surprised it doesn't get more of a mention on this site. 2 doors, 2 vestibules, lightweight, and very, very spacious inside. A treat to be lightweight AND have lots of space.

If you are using trekking poles anyway, the SS2 does have plenty of space for your mats :
SS2 3 mats inside
(you can also get the subtitute for trekking poles called Vertical Support Pole 0.490",4.3ozx2, under Extras)

True. Its defiantly more humid in Korea than here in Michigan. But terrain wise and campsite wise I don't think will be a factor.

Korea is all mountains, hills and valleys.

We plan on doing weekend hikes and camping until we get our vacation time. and probably spend 3-4 days hiking in the national parks there.

If it is a problem you'll see a gently used TT Strat2 here on the forums in a couple months. Shipped from Korea :p

I don't think it'll be a problem

zpacks probably does make some good tents, i'm hesitant about spending the 700 dollars.

sticker shocked!

I received the stratosphire 2 in the mail this evening and within two try's set it up like a pro.

Awesome design.

VERY spacious. I think it has more useable space than our rei qd3 2014. Every part of the floor is useable space. Seriously.

We will use the "lower" configuration because the net and fly were too close at the regular setting for my liking.

As far as weight it came to 2 pounds 13 oz which is spot on with the weight listed on the website at 46oz.

Extremely happy with the tent so far. And we shaved a pound and a half from the rei qd3 AND save 40 dollars AND it's made in America! BOOM

Stoked
