Hey all, I love my SL5 for family trips. It easily fits all four of us and keeps the bugs and weather out in the worst of conditions. My only beef has been the weight of the nest. The fly is 31oz but the nest is a whopping 43 ounces and in my estimation overbuilt. I have no idea why the netting would need to be so much heavier than the fly itself.

I have been toying with a custom inner and wanted to get feedback from folks here. The Golite inner is a 9' x 9' mid with one corner cut off which helps create a good vestibule and keep the rain out when the fly is open. It is roomy and my youngest daughter fits in the small section no problem. See drawings below.

My idea is to have a 9' x 7'6" netting mid with an offset pole so the netting is moved toward the back of the shelter to keep the rain out when the fly is open. It is kind of like the Pyranet 3 but bigger and oriented 90 degrees. It looks like this could save almost 24 oz and a bit of bulk. Seem brilliant, right? What am I missing here? Would love your feedback.

I don't have any input on your question, but what computer program did you use to create the drawings?

The inner has about 90 sq feet (floor plus "bathtub" sides) of 70 denier 190t Nylon Taffeta fabric.
The fly is 15d silnylon.

I took a look at doing something similar when I first got mine and decided it wasnt worth the dollars. The main reason is that my kids hiking ability is what is currently limiting trip distance, not the sherpa weight on my back and when I split it between 3 adults the weight savings dont add up to to much. If you arent already doing so using hiking poles bound together instead of the 13oz pole is easy savings.

As for your base the design looks okay but I think you are sacrifing useable space in the tent. I would go out full length and notch the corner less the the current version to get the 4th pad in. I would then just deal with the rain risk at the door, the hassle this would be would depend on climate.

Using 30d Sil for the floor and noseeum for the mesh I was coming out with an estimated weight of about 28oz so just under a pound of savings your dimensions would be a little lighter but similar. If you do decide to do it post pictures when you are done as I am still interested inthe results.
