I have crossed one precipice to the next level of gearhead status – I spent some free time last night running tests on my evernew titanium alcohol stove with amounts of alcohol and boil times with different pots… sadly couldn't use my Primus ETApower pot 1L with heat exchanger as it won't sit properly on my ti cross stand… alas.

Found that I get about 7:30 burn time with one ounce, and boil 2 cups of cold tap water in 6:20 or so…

All this has gotten me over the hump and I'm taking the alcohol stove on my next trip.

Now when I get a digital postal scale I'll really know I'm all in…

Isn't that fun?

I got a new jetboil and I know it's not UL, but it is un upgrade to my previous cook system. I am yet to break out a 6 pack of something cold and do my timed tests as well. Perhaps I'll dehydrate some new meal recipes as well and see how it all goes together!

You still have further levels to get to then, the journey is not over.

I still have so much to learn – a scale is pending just haven't found one I like for a reasonable price (suggestions?)…

And re: 6 pack I may have dug into the 6er of Duck Rabbit Imperial Russian Stout I picked up – at 10% it's not exactly a session beer but the one I had was awfully tasty!

Sitting in the garage futzing with gear requires a little taste I think.

Congrats Phillip on "converting" to alcohol – stoves, that is.

After you've used alky stove for a while look at Trail Designs "Sidewinder" Caldera Cone ti stove. It's a 3 fuel stove, alky, ESBIT and wood (with the Inferno option). It is VERY efficient regardless of which fuel you use.

At that point I'd recommend trying ESBIT for more conveniance. less fuel weight and a bit hotter burn.

I actually just ordered this one about an hour ago. $16 with free shipping (I got some other stuff as well).

scale

I don't know about the accuracy or quality but it had decent reviews and compared to the others at double the price. It will be my first scale since weighing pot 20 years ago! ha HAAAA – Its now legal here in CO but I don't care for it anymore.

Uh oh! The downward spiral has begun. ;-)

It's too bad that cooking on a fire is lighter.

And not cooking at all is lighter still.

Not eating is even lighter than that.

You can get that Escali scale at Target for $25.29

I picked up a digital postal scale off of ebay only 2 weeks after joining this site :P

You can get them shipped from inside the US for under $9! And mine is very accurate IME.

"digital jewelry scale 2000g" or something like that

You have only scratched the surface. Get a scale! It's eye opening, it's essential for weighing at least food. I use a DYMO 3# scale from Staples. If something weighs over 3# it's too heavy IMO. Wait till you get a sewing machine and make 10 packs, I'm on an out of control downward spiral…..

Have you set up those spreadsheets yet?
Signed-in at a GearGrams account?

I've started lists at gear grams admittedly only with manufacturer weights … But it's a start!

I bought one that goes up to 50 lbs off Amazon for about $15. It allows me to measure very small stuff and my whole pack when I am ready to roll out.

Never trust manufacturer's weights. Somehow they usually err on the optimistic side, sometimes by astounding amounts.

The scale and the spreadsheet are mightier than the sword.

GearGrams uses flash from any gearlists I've tried to look at. Flash is on its way out, so wondering if I'm missing something to view these lists, or if people just don't realize flash is out for mobile and tablets?
