I'm just getting back into backpacking after a 5+ year hiatus and in the process of switching out my old heavy gear for UL (with budget in mind).

My wife has expressed interest in going out on a couple weekend trips with me. I was initially going to purchase both of us the Kelty Cosmic down 20* bags. But I can't find any good deals on them. That makes each bag $170. I have since decided I will get an Enlightened Revelation 20* quilt for myself. I like the idea of trying a hammock in the near future and this will give me a head start as I could use it as a top or under quilt.

On to the question: I was still planning to get the wife the Kelty. But now I'm wondering if there is a smarter purchase of something I can get her that I'd be able to use myself. We are both about the same height (5'8"). Would it be smarter to get perhaps a warmer quilt for her so I have lighter sleeping option for warmer months? Any other ideas I might be missing? My Revelation can be fashioned into an underquilt (the reason I want it over the Enigma), so I like the idea of picking up a quilt for her as well that I could use as a top quilt. I can rationalize spending up to $240 or so for her bag/quilt, if it is something I would get use out of myself.

I will be backpacking the Sierra Nevada almost exclusively. And mostly 3-5 day trips.

This is my first post. Thanks for your help!

FWIW, my first bag was a Women's Kelty Cosmic Down 20. I didn't like it. I still have it as a loaner but I never use it myself. It's not very lofty, and the foot box is cramped and I always felt like my toes were being crushed. I upgraded to a Western Mountaineering Versalite (used, off eBay) and am much more happy with that bag in terms of comfort and warmth. I recognize the Versalite is a 10 degree bag but the loft difference between the two is much more than just an add'l 10 degrees.
