Anybody tried the WiTabs from Wilesco? They're supposed to be 20% more efficient than Esbit. Info: http://tinyurl.com/qju2ft3

I bought some last week.
The tabs are 7g each. (1/2 of a 14g Esbit)
I did 3 boil tests using 1 block each time in 2 different cone setups with my esbit stove.
2 tests with MST Ti Kettle/cone clone – 500ml of water. just showed bubbles forming on pan base at about 8 minutes. Hot enough for coffee or an instant meal (cous cous/noodles)
1 test with Evernew 600 pan/sidewinder – 400ml water – more/bigger bubbles than above but not breaking free – I reckon hot enough to rehydrate a meal with a cosy in warmer conditions.
Each tab burn lasted around 10 minutes. The last minute was a very small flame. They leave a small amount of black ash like a block shaped skin.
Having a bit of experience with 14g Esbit, I would say these are pretty much the same efficiency.
Esbit is very expensive compared to alcohol or gas – these were marginally cheaper.
UK forces Hexamine fuel weight for weight is the same efficiency as Esbit in my tests too. It is much much cheaper than esbit or Witabs, but the blocks are big and need breaking in 2 or more to fit an esbit specific stove. (My stove is not)
J,
Thanks for doing that test. Guess I'll use my remaining FireLite tabs and continue on with ESBIT.
(Until, that is, they devise a way to make "detuned" solid rocket fuel that is not toxic. That, along with Unobtanium hiking poles, will make my day.)
