I'm planning on ordering a Paradox Unaweep. However, I am not sure if I should order the pack bag with VX07 or VX21 XPAC. I have never used XPAC or seen it used in person as the main material for a pack bag. The VX07 would save around 5 oz. My main concern is the abrasion resistance and durability of VX07 because its top layer is just 70d nylon vs. 210 d on the vx21.

I will mainly be using the bag in the mountains of Colorado and occasionally desert hiking in Texas. I do some bush wacking and it will also be used in Colorado while scrambling and peak bagging. I do not plan on "hauling" the bag (dragging it up with a rope). Occasionally, when I'm extremely tired at the end of the day and crawling over piles of dead trees, the bottom of my pack does sometimes drag along fallen trees. You can see that the bottom of the pack has a 500D load sling, but this will only protect the main bag in the middle of the bottom and not the sides of the bottom.

Do you think the VX07 should be durable enough for mu use? I'm no really relying upon long term total waterproofness because the seams are not taped and I use dry bags for my gear.

You are carrying the Unaweep to carry heavy loads. Given that, I can't see 5 oz making a significant difference and would go with the higher durability.

Dave U., thanks for the feedback. I'll usually be carrying 30-50 pounds on the hike in and out. However, I frequently base camp for a week and will use the pack with around 15-20 pounds for peak bagging and day hikes (most of the weight from climbing or fishing gear). I want to be as fast and light as possible when peak bagging, while still not worrying about gear failure and totally babying my gear. At the same time, I'm not wreckless with gear and I don't try to drag my pack along rocks and trees.

I think you could go either way depending on your priorities. VX07 does better with brush than the 70D face fabric would suggest, largely because the stiff laminate construction makes it very slick. It is pretty vulnerable to abrasion from sharp stuff. If you anticipate rubbing the pack a lot while chimneying, you might get scuffs and holes.

07 would work, but you might have to patch it a bit occasionally. 21 would be a more conservative choice.
