I have a large cuben groundsheet…and I've ordered the sea to summit nano net. I'd like to try to make an actual enclosed, zippered innernet with them.

I've seen a few threads about making nets for 'mids, but nothing that's going to be terribly helpful to me just yet. And you folks know how nasty this search function is at this point (it keeps saying "showing results for internet")

anyway – can anyone point me in a nice direction?? It doesn't need to be pretty…i just need to figure out how to sew the netting to the groundsheet (how hard is it to make one from silnylon? would it be easier to make one from scratch or to just use this old cuben groundsheet i have and never use anymore?). I also need to figure out how to put a zipper in, one that bends. That seems really hard to me for some reason…….

Thanks all!!! I'm taking my first sewing class on Wednesday night and I'm really excited!! You guys have so inspired me…you rock!!

I have been considering something similar. The STS nano is asymmetric, with the peak nearer the head end. I wonder if it was tilted so that the apex is over the midpoint in plan, then tapering long triangular walls on the sides ( long edges, and rectangular head wall (not really, its sides would taper). The plan would not be rectangular, but would taper from head to foot.
I would start with the apex at the desired height, as well as centred in plan.
The low head wall and tapered (triangular) side walls would be part of (extensions of) the bathtub floor, and would give a little wind protection.

While this is for a different net tent, one that wouldn't fit in the Duomid, Yama Mountain Gear's tutorial is really helpful for figuring out how/which seams to use. It should be pretty adaptable. I would imagine that a Duomid inner would be simpler than the 1.25 Bug inner here.

clayton thanks for the link! That's pretty much what I'm looking for.

I also found a few nice links about sewing zippers on a curve. Should be fun!

MYOG DouMid Inner

The link above shows my process. I did have fun, and learned a lot, and ended up with a good product. But….

In retrospect, if I had to do it again, I’d buy something. Inners are now quite common, well done, and cheap.

Jennifer,

I'm curious on how your sewing class went?

I've been looking for a class locally, but cannot seem to find anything basic. I may just have to resort to internet tutorials.

Sounds like something that could be funded by a tax return instead ;)

My problem is that I want something that doesn't yet exist. I would like a 1.5 person…and to figure out how best to set it up in my duomid.

I have the solo for myself and love it – i tried the duo and didn't really like it all that much, but maybe I need to give it a second run. I had a used silnylon version and it was just difficult to deal with (single pole inside, etc), really bulky packed up, etc.

So I had John from Bearpaw make me one…and I don't like that one, either. Honestly even with the cuben bottom it weighs nearly 16 oz! And the two together (the 1.5 inner and the cuben 'mid) were literally the size of an REI camping tent. No good. I was very disappointed………

So I'm not sure what else to do – I was thinking of taking some of the floor from the bear paw inner and stitching it to the STS nano net…then adding a zipper. But not sure if that will work…but I'm working on some sketches.

As for the sewing class – it was awesome! The other lady didn't show up, so it was a 3-hour 1:1 course – so I got to tell her what I wanted to learn and she was able to show me. She also just HAPPENED to have exactly the same machine I bought – so that made life really easy as well.

So I'm making my list of things I want to try to build – and I'm getting really excited about it!
