It's me again!

So I'm looking to blow that sweet 20% coupon on a pad. I tried both the UL7 synmat regular and TAR xlite large at REI today. I found them both pretty comfortable, although the ul7 won out by a little bit. I have two concerns:

The Exped didn't seem to be any thinner than the advertised 20 inches and I found it *just* barely wide enough for my large side-sleeping self. However I am a bit worried by claims that the xlite regular is thinner than the 20" once inflated. Can anyone confirm this? The large was plenty wide but I don't really need the extra length and that would make the weight equal to the synmat.

Also the rei guy there warned me that when you share shelters with people (such as on the AT) they get really annoyed with the xlite noise. I didn't find it too bad and I barely move when I sleep. But do people really get woken up and angry about that little crinkling?

They both felt warm but apparently the xlite is warmer and won't be hurt by moisture inside.

Thanks for any replies in advance and sorry for all the threads lately!

anyone that doesnt bring earplugs to sleep in a shelter on the AT will be disturbed by mice scampering, people farting, tossing and turning, apnea, people hacking and coughing, snoring, numerous midnight pee runs, peoples cell phones. An xlites noise is the least of the disturbances.

I dont notice any noise from mine. But then again, I sleep with earplugs almost always.

I have no problems with the regular xlites width personally. My short xlite is harder to stay on because it is very narrow at the hips-to-thigh area. Both are fine for what I use them for. Some people are harder to please.

I just happened to have my women's XLite handy. The women's and the regular are both stated to be 20 inches wide. The inflated width on mine measures 20 inches at about 20 inches down from the head end. It maintains 19.5 inches or greater width over an 18 inch span. The shape is not a simple rectangle, it becomes narrower at both the head and foot ends. I hope somebody with a "regular" can verify my findings for you.

Tough choice between the Synmat UL7 and the XLite. I find them to be about equally comfortable. While fussing with it inside the house I do easily notice the crinkly noise but in the field I am oblivious to the sound.

As has also been noted elsewhere, as you get near the edge of the Neo Xlite, the sides tend to collapse, making it effectively narrower than its physical dimensions suggest.
