Anyone have any experience with this jacket:

http://www.mec.ca/product/5029-919/mec-alpine-refuge-jacket-mens/?f=10+50021+50089

I'm looking for a rain jacket for use in the Yukon and parts of Alaska. The normal stomping grounds are the Coastal Mountain Range, Tombstone Mountains, and Kluane. The Yukon can be pretty arid, but when we do get rains they tend to be damn cold.

For weight savings, I'm tempted to pick up a jacket like the Helium ii, or the Rab Pulse, but the durability and longevity really concern me. I don't like the idea of spending good money on a jacket that is going to wet out after a few uses and rip or tear as soon as I'm confronted with a bit of bushwhacking (which is more often than not).

The Alpine Refuge Jacket looks like it will be around 12oz for a large and if it can provide more durability and a little more confidence that it can withstand a cold rain I'd be happy to sacrifice the weight. Anybody have experience with this jacket, or with Toray Dermizax in general? The only info I can find is that Hig and Erin preferred Dermizax to Goretex on their Alaskan trek.

Other jacket suggestions are more than welcome as well.

Cheers…

Yeah, I've read through that thread. Was hoping someone had some practical experience with the jacket, or any updated info on the waterproofness/breathability of dermizax nx.

The Toray Dermizax NX is some very good fabric. 20k/24hr 40k/m2/24h It is at the top of the industry right now – along with only two or three fabrics side-by-side IIRC.

KUIU is also using it for their Yukon Jacket and their crazy awesome, makes me want to drool until I get a pair, Yukon Gloves!

That's a good price for a jacket with that kind of performance. I haven't seen the newer REI eVent jacket, but I'd give that MEC jacket a shot if I needed one in a heartbeat! I was in love with polartec neoshell last year, maybe this is even better??

Yeah, I'm really leaning toward buying it. I'm hesitant because it's so hard to find information on the performance apart from a few brief reviews on MEC.

Just try it out… worse comes to worse you throw it up on the gear swap page and someone jumps on it and you get something else. no biggie. then you can put your two cents in too and add to the feedback yourself. new stuff could always use more reviewing…

You guys both sound just like the evil little voice inside my head that's always helping me justify gear purchases. haha. I'm seriously leaning towards trying it out. If I do, I'll be sure to put a review together by the end of the summer.

Cheers.
