I placed my order for a Zpacks Zero in size medium over the weekend and an starting to think its going to be too big. I currently have MLD Prophet and want something a little smaller, but larger than the Burn. I prefer to have one pack for all seasons. I typically only go out for weekend or 3 day trips. I'm wondering if i can get by with a Zpacks Zero small with a couple of extra inches added to the top. I think I need about 2,000 cubic inches of pack, not counting the mesh pocket. If you really analyze the Zpacks website numbers vs. the MLD website numbers, something doesn't make sense. I am going with the roll down top and think if the Zpacks is a little too big, I can just roll up the extra. Here is my gear list, keep in mind in the colder months, I need room for extra insulating layers. I typically don't go out when it gets too cold and if its much below freezing, I'll go back to the ground.

– Dream Hammock Darien Single Layer 1.1
– EE Prodigy (synthetic) 40 degree quilt used as an under quilt
– Original Golite Ultra 20 top quilt
– Hammock Gear Cuben Fiber Tarp
– Jetboil
– Lawson's thin ccf pad

Any input will be appreciated

The small is probably 1,500 ci in the main bag. I would order a small and ask Zpacks to make it 3-4 inches taller than the standard model. I did this and it worked out great. It's around 1,700-1,800 cu. in. not including the water bottle and mesh pockets.

A small Zero is 1,700cu/in if Zpacks specs are correct. Add the roll top feature and it's probably 100-200 extra cu/in so that will probably get you there. The mesh pocket holds a lot also. I have the small and it is much larger than I anticipated. A medium would be truly cavernous for weekend trips (for me anyway).

Does Zpacks add a little extra fabric to account for the roll top? I was assuming not, and after it's rolled done a couple if times I figured that wold take away from the size. The standard size is 28" tall, would adding an additional 3 inches to the height make it too tall? Also, keep in mind that I carry 2 quilts since I'm using a hammock.

I think most manufacturers add length for a roll top, but I would shoot Joe an email to see what he thinks about it. The sizing really depends on your gear so it's tough to compare between different hikers.

I can tell you that my wife and I did a weekend trip on the AT in North Carolina two weeks ago with lows around 30F, where I carried ALL of our gear except the tent & her sleeping bag. So that was 8-9lbs of food, two puffies, two sets of rain gear, two sets of clothing, stove set, my 20F XXL/XW Zpacks quilt, etc etc and it all fit. Granted, the mesh pocket & one side pocket were full, plus the lashing on the back held my rain jacket. But, that's what that stuff is there for. :)

P.S.- Mine is the 22" torso version so it's a little longer than the regular size.

I ordered a Zpacks extra small zero last year and asked Joe to add the roll top to the pack since I wanted it to double as a dry bag. He had me request 2" of extra height on the order form and kick in $5. The end result was no net change in volume, which is what I wanted. Keep in mind that this information may be specific to the extra small, which doesn't have as many sizing options as the rest of the zero line.

I'm planning on getting an extra small zero for a daypack. I wonder the volume when packed in a quart bag and how much room it would be. Could post any pictures? having trouble finding a review of the extra small zero. Thanks!
