Hi. I'm going to be in lake Tahoe mid June and am going to spend four or five days back packing. Does anyone have a good loop or out and back to suggest around forty miles?
Thanks!

Desolation wilderness would be my recommendation or any sections of the Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) see https://www.tahoerimtrail.org/
Yea I would stick with desolation.. Emerald bay is a good central location for a loop. You could also very easily hitch hike in tahoe if you come out somewhere else and need to get back to your car.
Desolation is nice, but it is also crowded and small. Very few possibiities there for a full five day loop of anything, Three days gets you in, out, and around most places. But that's worth doing. So get a permit–the process is Byzantine–and for the tree days out of Echo Lake or Wrights Lake. Or hike to a base camp and dayhike out of there for a day or two.
Then for added fun, head south off Carson Pass to go to Dardanelles Lake, SHowers Lake, or the Meiss Meadows. You could do a nice two day loop there and back…
And get five days of lovely backpacking
We have links to a bunch of these hikes on our website.
