Give serious thought to the requirement for the adz. The pick, Yes, for self arrest, but in a panic situation it is pretty easy to pull an ax under the body, and the adz close to the face.
You know best, but try to remember what it was like when you were learning.

Depending upon the height of the kid, if the kid is shorter than 5', she/he can use a third tool such as Simond's Fox or Grivel Black 3. But they are hard to come by now. If buying new ones, make sure you get an ax for no longer than 50 cm.
