Hi everyone…my wife and I are trying to figure out the pros and cons of getting the $160 Lunar Duo Outfitter vs the Lunar Duo Scout at twice the price…as far as we can tell, they are the same design, but use different materials, resulting in the lower priced one being 1 lb heavier.

Part of me wants to get the more expensive one as we have moved towards getting lighter (just got Enlightened Equipment quilts, and I am using an Osprey Talon 44 this year when I get to start hiking after tax season). The problem is that funds are getting tight.

My questions are:

Does anyone have the Lunar Duo Outfitter? If so, how do you like it?

My wife is concerned that the LD is just a summer tent since it is has no side walls where the vestibules are, it's just mesh. I tried to tell her that since you can cinch the vestibules down pretty far, that the wind in colder weather would be kept out for the most part…does anyone have any experience with the LD in cold weather, and how do you think it does in blocking the cold winds?

Thanks in advance for any advice. Anyone who owns the light LD can chime in as well, as it is the same design.

A bunch of folks here picked up the outfitter version when it went on sale for @$100, and I've kicked myself for not getting one to try. Maybe one of them will report in. I'm most interested in the fabric difference, whether increased durabilitiy and lack of sil-nylon-based sagging are worth the more weight (and substantially less cost).

I cannot comment on the scout / outfitter issue. I have the lighter of the two from when there was only one.

Regarding storm worthiness, the LD is just fine. The vestibules buttons up quite nicely and will protest you and your gear. The more important consideration is the two large panels. If you are expecting wind, you really need to stake out the mid panel guylines to keep them from flapping and making a racket.

You already know this, but the tent is really comfortable and spacious.

Thanks for the replies. We have now morphed into getting the lighter one…but then we looked at the Stratospire 2, and are in complete gridlock deciding between the LD and the SS2!

Someone vote for one and break the gridlock we are suffering. lol

I vote for the SS2. I have the SS1 for me and pup and it is simply AWESOME. the geometry gives some people pause, but honestly, don't think about it, just follow the directions for how to set it up and it's great. The offset poles are a work of genius to give you more space than you know what to do with, and the vestibules are literally cavernous (I'm a vestibule fan)

So there.

+1 on SS2. Hard to beat Tarptent for quality, durability and functionality.

Thanks for the input! We did end up ordering the SS2. I am sure we would be happy with either one, but what finally swayed us is that we know several people who own Tarptents, and they all love theirs. The bummer is that it's on back order, so who knows when we will get our tent. :(

We got our tent about 1 and 1/2 weeks after we ordered it. It is much easier to set up than I had imagined based on the posts I have read. We have used Franco's method from Youtube rather than Henry's method in his video on his site.

It is so spacious, and the vestibules are enormous. It is 46 oz with everything in the sack. Not ultralight, but between two people, it averages to 23 oz each.

It is larger rolled up in its sack than I had thought it would be. Definitely a lot large in diameter than a nalgene bottle (Franco had a video where he had said the tent was about the size of two nalgene bottles stacked on top of one another). I would say 1-1.5" bigger in diameter. Not that we care, we love the tent!

Our only faux pas was seam sealing it in Southeastern Virginia during April. We got pollen intermingled in the sealant, which probably only we will notice. :0

Mike, Congratulations on the new tent. Hopefully I can catch up with you on a trip soon, this moving thing is killing me.
