After 10 years in the AZ sun, my car's metallic sun shade finally developed an eight-inch split…but most of it was still in ok shape, so I made a FBC/MountainHouse cozy with it.

1.4oz weight, very simple stand-up format, and makes me feel better than just throwing out the old sun shade. So, if you've got a sun shade on its last legs, here's an idea…

Nice work. I like the self standing design. Did you use clear tape for the seams?

I initially tried clear tape, but it didn't stick perfectly. Then I remembered that I had some metal tape left over from a home repair project, and that worked perfectly (and it was a perfect match for the color).

I'm not really familiar with the sunshade material – but it appears similar to the pizza pouches you can buy for insulating take-out pizza/boxes. They are made from an outer mylar sheet, center thin foam sheet, and inside thin plastic sheet. I have used this pouch material to make a freezer bag cozy. I also made a cozy that fits around my IMUSA pot, and some small square pieces for picking-up the hot pot.

Anyway point is, I used my seal-a-meal machine to weld together the edges to make these items.

Thanks, Kelly — that's a great idea!

The sunshade material is exactly as you describe, except that it's mylar on both sides of the foam (no plastic liner), but I'm sure the heat sealing idea would work perfectly.

I liked the idea, so I'm now trying to seal some scrap Reflectix pieces. It works to seal the edges of one piece, but I can't seal two pieces together–probably it's too thick. So I think I would still need to use duct tape to connect everything together. I'm thinking that Reflectix might be a bit different from car window shades, but I don't have one of those to compare the Reflectix to. No matter anyway, as this was just a whim to kill some time today. I'm quite happy to use the cozies that Dave sells at Simple Outdoor Solutions.
