Hey yall, wasnt sure if this is the right place to post but was thinking of turning my MH nitrous down jacket that currently weighs 11.75 oz after removed waist drawstring into an anorak and removing the pocket zips as well. Does anybody know what kind of weight savings I will get? the main zip is a #5 ykk I think and #3s on the pockets. I am very novice and will be stitching only by hand.

Just trying to avoid buying a seperate goose hood and montbell ex or ultra light.

Thanks
Alex

I just weighed #5 40 inch zipper – 1.16 ounce. Your zipper must be shorter so a little less than 1 ounce.

Are youu sure you want to do this? When it's just a little bit cold it's nice to unzip so you don't over-heat.

haha I have gone back and forth on this and I think I can do more than just cut the zipper out, There is the fabric that blocks wind through the zipper and I can remove some width as well because I am a string bean i guess haha. I am hoping for weight savings in excess of 2 oz including pockets.

Dealing with lack of ventilation, I find myself never needing it unzipped all the way… SO hopefully this works out haha, plus I picked it up off craigslist for 45 bucks, a steal I say! But it wont break my heart too much if I mess it all up!

Thanks for the weight of that zipper!

I figure it's okay to give unsolicited advice if I first give you weight of zipper : )

It's funny when someone asks for something like this and gets baraged with advice to do something different.

well if that person doesnt have a good response to the suggestions to do something different then…. maybe it was a good suggestion! haha. I figured people are on this site to either be barraged or be the barrager, or a little bit of both so it all works out!

Alex, taking more than a tiny bit of width out of the front will make the fit pretty weird.

I've turned a few coats into anoraks, mostly to preempt a failing zipper. I do two bartacks across the zipper at the desired height, cut out the zipper, then sew the draft flap to the opposite side. Not aesthetic, but simple and effective. Weight savings is exceedingly minimal.

Do you think my 2 oz weight savings is far off including removing pockets?

I would just sell the Nitrous and get a Backcountry Hadron.

That BC hadron looks like a pretty good deal! I went ahead and cut up the jacket and got it down to 10.15 oz. I will call it a victory even though I had to remove a bottom baffle that was a little long for me anyway. Definitaly cut it a little close with how much zipper I left. Have just enough room to wiggle my arms in haha!!

But I just now realized this down is hydrophobic so I am more inclined to make this guy work!
