Hey my wife and I recently moved to the metro detroit area. We are looking to go out backpacking this weekend. Anyone have a good place for a weekend around here? We want to backpack not necessarily car camp.

We were thinking Pinckney area. Crooked lake specifically

Head WEST to the Manistee River Trail/NCT loop. Or towards Gaylord to the Jordan River Pathway. Two of my favorite lower Michigan backpacking haunts.

DOH! West. Head west!!!!! WEST!!! it's east for me :)

I read "Metro detroit camping" a little too literally and thought, "just sleep in your car in a Walmart parking lot like any road-tripping college student, itinerant roofer, or migrating farm worker would".

Sorry. Carry on.

The Waterloo-Pickney trail sounds like what your after. About 35 miles long, several campgrounds, rolling hills, many small lakes. Crooked Lake is near the east TH. Likely to be very wet right now with the snow just going out but with the ground still frozen, it's kind of wet and boggy any time of the year. I would buy or go to the library and get the Jim DuFresne book "50 Hikes in Michigan". A disadvantage, this trail is not a loop.

There is a 17 mile loop trail near me (Toledo OH area) in Oak Openings Metropark with camping. Also a 22 mile out and back along the Maumee River, part of the Buckeye Trail, also with camping possibilities. If either of these two sound good, PM me.

I think we might try crooked lake this next weekend. You're right about the weather and the possible soggy terrain. We might wait a bit longer to get out then. That 60 degree weather made us both antsy to get out.
