I work with NoSeeUm all the time. I have some of the new lighter weight NoSeeUm from Quest and even though it is thinner, it still "behaves" well. I am currently working on a special order with NanoSeeUm and I cannot stand it. It snags, where NoSeeUm does not. It picks up every piece of thread, lint etc and then it holds on to it for dear life. NoSeeUm shakes it right off. It also does not respond to ironing.
Not worth the savings in weight in my opinion.
End rant. Back to sewing in frustration.

Katharina, why do you suppose the Nano acts that way? Is it just the hole size getting smaller, or more than that?

Delmar, I think it's more a matter of the filament that makes up the fabric. That's about as much as I can say at this point. Maybe, as with anything else, it has to do with the ratio of volume to surface area?? ( of the filament itself). I am fishing here, but I know from studying soil that clay is "sticky" because the particles are tiny and flat and have an electrical charge (-) . This stuff seems to stick to itself and holds on to any little feather, hair, thread or anything else.
I am sure people with better ideas and more knowledge will chime in, but after working with this, I would not buy any shelter, bug bivvy etc. that uses this stuff. Just my opinion, clearly.

I wonder if putting the material in a dryer with a dryer sheet might help with the static problems? Just don't melt it in the process!
Anyway, just a thought…

Hi Kat

I am totally confused. One moment you say that NoSeeUm 'behaves' well, then you say ' I am currently working on a special order with NanoSeeUm and I cannot stand it. It snags, where NoSeeUm does not.'

What's the difference between the 'good' stuff and the 'bad' stuff? Enquiring minds want to know! (Seriously.)

Cheers

Roger – two different products.

NoSeeUm: 0.96 oz/square yard (or 0.87 oz for lighter version from Quest), doesn't snag
NanoSeeUm: 0.7 oz/square yard, snags, makes Kat unhappy!

Kat – any idea how the lightweight stuff from Lightheart (0.77 oz/square yard) is in terms of snagginess? Is it pretty much the same as nanoseeum?

@DK. The lighter weight NoSeeUm does not snag at all. It feels lighter but otherwise behaves the same as the heavier weight.

@Roger
. I missed your question, but it was answered in the meantime.

Hi Kat and DK

I missed the key point: NoSeeUm vs NanoSeeUm!
Can't trust all that nano-technology stuff … :-)

Cheers

Maybe you got some bad stuff.
Have some .8 oz polyester netting from BPWD, and similar weight but nylon from T-H, and they have never presented problems such as you describe. I like Quest, but sometimes they stock the cheapest stuff available – in good faith, but not being aware of the drawbacks. The .8 oz stuff I have is more durable than what I've seen on some tents being marketed.

If the NanoSeeUm had true nanoscale components, then one would expect electrical and magnetic effects simply from the nano scale.

But in this case, I imagine that static energy is the cause, and it ought to be possible to deal with it as such?
