Link above should take you to a description of Mcale’s bypass strap system.
I assume it has been around for a long time but I only just ran into it.
Anyone have experience with it?

Yes, it works very well. The by-pass strap controls how close or distant the top of the pack rides from the back, and the shoulder strap controls how much weight is on your shoulders. Completely independent – you can adjust either without affecting the other. Very nice indeed!
I'm surprised that as long as it's been out, others haven't copied it, but it is a more complicated than just sewing a lift strap onto a shoulder pad. Perhaps Dan has a patent on it, I don't know. What I do know is that he is a very clever person, and his packs are incredibly versatile!
Ditto that. When you consider how many mountaineers and climbers all over the world use McHale backpacks, the proof is in the pudding.
I'm so in love with mine, maybe cause I practically live out of it now, that if I lost it or it was stolen, I'd feel like I lost an arm or leg…:-O .
After a lifetime of backpacking, trying NUMEROUS brands, and one previous three thousand+ mile slog with a Kelty Tioga, nothing compares to a McHale.
Tried it, have a pack, and I don't use it. It wasn't for me, and the bypass strap system just doesn't do that much for me compared to my standard suspension on other packs.
