Hey all

Not really a BPL question, but I have a good feeling some people on here can point me in the right direction. I am trying to find a list of the history of bear attacks on people in Yosemite (fatal and non-fatal). A corworker and myself got into a dispute over there. I seem to think there are MUCH less attacks over the years than he thinks. Just looking for some difinitve proof.

Thanks!

A few people have been injured by bears.

No person is known to have ever been killed by a bear or mountain lion in Yosemite.

One person was killed by a deer, a young child.

The other 900+ people that have died there have been drowned, swept over water falls, fallen, froze, murdered, or died in car accidents.

The book "Off the wall: Death in Yosemite" basically details every known death there, taken from park records and local newspapers since the area was being visited by settlers.

The camper next to me in Tualumne had his clock rung by a momma bear when he tried to take back his food he left on the picnic table.

He didn't report it, as he would have gotten a ticket.

i believe he had a concussion and walked around like he was drunk for awhile, but refused help.

The book tells of a camper at little yosemite valley who saw and heard a person trying to steal their food from their bearcan one night, They came out of their tent in the moonlight, and walked over and said "what do you think your doing?" and punched the person in the face.

Only it wasnt a person, it was a bear. One swipe of the bears paw threw the person 10 ft, and the bear continued to work on the bear can till it got tired and left.

Just FYI – there is one prolific blogger from the PCT class of 2013 that slept with her food in Yosemite – I believe it didn't all fit in her bear can – and is actively recommending that others do the same. She's hiking again this year. Sooooooooo, I won't be surprised if there are a few bears visiting inside hiker tents.
