Just wanted to add that the R1 hoody did show up tonight!!

We have to hold on to our old Patagonia Micro Puffs PO, the new one is almost 3 oz. heavier than the first generation and they switched from Polarguard Delta to Climashield and it getting more expensive too….lesson 1 in how do you kill a perfect product!

Next time I will look for the Cocoon PO.

In my opinion Patagonia is going for street wear instead of serious (light weight) outdoor clothing…where is the core?

Bummer about the MicroPuff. Glad I picked up one of the older versions up.

I would definitely go for a Cocoon PO or Hoodie before I bought the latest version MicroPuff.

For those considering a hoody, Melanzana makes a Micro Grid Hoody for $61 and comes in at 11.4 oz for a large after replacing the shock cord with a lighter version.

The melanzana lacks a zip though. At that price i might order one to try anyway though. Or just cruise up to leadville :)

True no zipper, but a great hoody none the less. Really like mine for cold weather fishing or a little something for day hiking in cooler weather.

I have some capilene base layers in size small from a few years ago. They fit well, but when I try new ones in small, they are too large. I've been wondering if they decided to go with a looser fit in their base layers, or if they up-sized smalls. Has anyone else seen this, or have experience with larger sizes so they can say whether they are looser fit?

I want to get some merino base layers to try making a hoody, but I'm reluctant to try Patagonia due to the fit of the capilenes I tried on.

I too lament the increased weight of the micro-puff line. Patagonia seems to come out with great original designs that become bloated with features over time. I do give them props for using as much recycled content as possible. What is the word out there on Climashield insulation? This Climashield GREEN used in the new micropuff line is listed as continuous filament insulation with 40% recycled content.

did anyone else notice that the pic of th eR1 hoody appears to no longer have the offset zipper on the backlava?

I went down to my local patagonia store, but they didn't have the R1 hoody in my size. I did get to feel another size first hand and the fabric is a lot stretchier than I had thought. I just ordered it from the website and I'm so psyched. I think this is going to become my new favorite piece of gear.

Of course, I know why I love it. It's just like the ninja outfit I had when I was a kid.

I just got an R1 Hoody after not being impressed with midweight wool's drying times…must be a 2006, as it does have the offset zipper. Fits super-snug, but it sure feels warm that way with the inner flocking making more skin contact. It will replace a buff, an OR Ninjaclava (dude, we are SO all age 7!), and probably also gloves unless it's below freezing. It's not a significantly lighter solution than all that, but paired with a windshirt it'll be incredibly versatile…and I like the idea of not just lighter weight stuff, but simply less stuff, period.

Seems like a nice piece so far; I'll put up a user review once it gets some field testing this fall/winter.

Hmmmm… I realize the Climashield likely weighs more than the Polarguard Delta insulation BUT:

>Climashield is more durable after repeated packings than PG Delta.

>Climashield is a bit warmer per thickness than PG Delta.

>Climashield has better retention of loft over time than PG Delta after repeated packing.

I got my R1 Hoody and it's great. I'm a little disappointed in the weight of the XL being 14.6 ounces though. I'm wondering if I can use this a replacement for my North Face Fleece?

My kids [5,3] are nagging me for their own. Sorry kids, only Dads can play backpack ninja!
