Going to be heading to this area in early april with nothing to do but explore and kill time for about a month. Looking for recommendations on a longish walk around 100 miles and maybe several shorter ones between 20-50 miles? I've only driven through this area and dayhiked at arches…

Two caveats are that we will have a dog (so no NPs) and we have a vehicle with low clearance. Dog is comfortable with ~20 mile days I've dealt with ~40 mile water carries. Not too concerned about having plentiful water.

Thanks.

The Grand Staircase – Escalate NM allows dogs as well as a ton of other places in the Colorado plateau. One thing that comes to mind about Southern Utah is scrambling. Even pretty tame routes often have occasional ledges and things that require minor scrambling. Is your pooch ok with that? Unless it is part mountain goat those point might be a bit awkward.

Maybe there are some folks on here who know of some long routes that don't have too many of these. Pretty much every place I have been there has one or more short stretches that could be construed as animal abuse. For example, I always bring a thin rope to lower or raise my pack across these scrambles if I think it will be safer.

So many things to do, but staying away from NPs is unfortunate – nearly tragic. But anyway, my brother did Buckskin/Paria with his dog. I think he had webbing to lower her on the one down climb.

This area can have some truly powerful winds, and the soil here is often powdery sand which will get everywhere.

I suggest bringing a very storm worthy shelter, a trowel to bury anchors if stakes wont work.

Consider a tent without mesh, or with closable mesh, so that you can keep the blown sand out. One that I have not tried, but like the looks of is the Big Agnes Slater lineup.
