I really liked the features the 610.2 pack, but I wanted to add just a few minor features to it. The past few packs I've made I didn't have any pockets, so it was a big change for me to add some. My biggest complaint is that I always get them caught up on something or other, which overtime tends to destroy them. I decided if I was going to add them, make them bomber and not worry about it, so 1000d Cordura was the material of choice. Speaking of material, the entire body was multi color of VX21 of what I had on hand, and the Cordura I picked up not long ago for really cheap. Material-wise I had just enough of everything, which worked out great.
The webbing was some 9/16" climbing webbing I had left from a recent trip that was some anchor off fall that wouldn't really be used for anything else. A bit overkill in the grand scheme but at least it added a fresh color palette.

The straps were from a $10 eBay sale which worked out perfectly since I didn't want to spend the time on straps, as those always seem to be the most time consuming anyways. The back pocket was also 1000d Cordura, and I still wanted to have the vertical daisy chains so I added them to the outside and sewed the straps for the front underneath them. The top closure I wanted a different closure from what I've used in the past, I'm not convinced that hook and loop is always the best, and zippers seem to always fail given enough time. Haven't used buttons in a whole,
So we'll give them a shot. That front pocket can also expand to ~5" deep which is perfect for harness and gear rack.

This is the first pack I've made without load lifters and I'm amazing how well the suspension can carry if sized properly. I was able to get out for a quick packraft trip this past weekend, and at 31lbs total it carried flawlessly.

Even with the overkill fabrics, super comfy padded should straps, 3/4" hardware, 9/16" overkill webbing, snap buttons and all, this only weight a hair under 37oz. Time will tell but very pleased on the amount of features for low weight penalty.

Very nice work Jon. Buttons are cool. Nice big drain grommets. Looks very stout. Bushwacking shouldn't be a problem. That pack should last a long time. Thanks for sharing.

I like it! Very neat and clean. I especially like the color choice. I actually have some navy blue and steel gray VX21 on hand that I'll be using to make my next pack, so our color schemes will be quite similar.

Looks great, Jon. Is there any aluminum in there or just a foam frame?

Thanks Sam.

There is a single aluminum stay .772" wide x 21.2" long x .125" thick 6061 alum alloy. I work at a sign shop that works with 6061 in full sheets all day long, otherwise I'd order in 7075, althought I've never really noticed much flex. I will be taking back panel off again and sewing in two more stay pockets (this time with access on top) so I can switch it out from single to double stay. It'll be at the expense of 2.2 oz but to me that's worth it, still under 2.5 lbs.

Also Sam, off topic but I finally saw a Go Ruck in person the other week, those are some pretty bomber packs. I'm a big fan after seeing one in person, as well as seeing an interview of the owner of Go Ruck on youtube. Seems like an outstanding guy to work for.

Hey Jon, thanks for the GR comments – we strive for quality.

Also thanks for the response to my question. My coworker just built a pack using the same aluminum as you and is so far happy. I have a pair of ILBE surplus stays on order from eBay so a frame pack is in my future. Will probably do 1000d like you did.

This monster of yours will last a lifetime.

Thanks for the compliment. I've never seen those frame stays you found on eBay. Those look awesome let me know how they turn out!

The stays arrived today. They're definitely used and a bit beat up but they were only $10 and no extra shipping so essentially the same price as buying aluminum from the hardware store, but in the proper 7075. For those curious one of the suppliers of these stays for the military is called Harper Works (http://harperworks.net/). Not sure if that's exclusive or if there are others.

Sam mentioned the aluminum stays, if anyone is looking for a great solution to aluminum stays, they are great I just got a pair in. Just thought I'd add that to it in case anyone came across this thread down the road and was curious of results.
