Today I made a pair of shoulder straps from heavy leno lock mesh (7.6 ounces per square yard from Outdoor Wilderness Fabrics).

MESH

Why? Hmmm, not a good answer here. I was just curious to see how it would work or, as Clinton said, because I could. No good reason really.

They weigh about an ounce each which is typical of other shoulder straps that I have made. They should breath well and be cooler than foam straps. Sewing them was very easy. The material cuts easily, holds its shape and allows the sewing machine needle to penetrate it easily. Certainly not as soft as foam straps and the edges are thin and, possibly abrasive. I sewed a tube and then turned it inside out so there aren’t any raw edges on the outside. I’ll try them out for awhile and see what I think.

Here’s a photo:

Have others made shoulder straps from leno mesh and, if so, what was your experience.

Well Daryl, you get your wish. I don't make anything myself, but I have played with duct tape and superglue on lots of my equipment and have seen the same of my friends. A bag that a friend of mine used overseas was cutting into his shoulders so he chopped up his camelbak tube and duct taped it under both sides of each strap just over the stress points on top of his shoulder. He got the idea because he carried 2 camelbak bladders for missions and found himself wrapping the tube around the backpack strap to keep it off his shoulder.

I wonder if sewing a similar type of tube on the underside of your straps will increase the overall comfort of the mesh strap and not prevent ventilation? It would have to be strong and elastic at the same time in order to compress under load but not collapse completely.

Good luck and let me know if it works.

Joe,

Thanks for the idea. I'll keep it in mind if the straps decide to irritate me.
