I need to add a few new backpacking stoves to our Scout troop's lightweight backpacking kits. We are big fans of the Optimus Stella stove for a few reasons — The offset canister provided the solid base for the 4Q pots commonly used by the boys for group rehydration, and the integral piezeo starter made it easy for everyone to use. They have been troopers, but are no longer available.

Unfortunately, the new Optimus Vega does not include the piezeo starter. I know we could go with it and pack a flamethrower, but as long as we have to look at another model, I thought I would open it up for the BPL opinions…

We want to stay with an offset canister stove. What would y'all recommend?

If you're dead-set on a stove with piezo ignition your options will be pretty limited. The Primus Gravity EF and the Primus EtaPower EF bot have the piezo. but you're looking at a pretty significant weight gain with the Gravity over say the Vega (6.28 vs 9.5 oz) and with the EtaPower EF you're buying a whole system including HE Pot and windscreen so it's hard to know what the weight of the stove alone would be.

If you're willing to give up piezo ignition, the fire maple 117/118 are pretty well reviewed around here as well as the kovea spider. both options would be cheaper than the Vega.
