Hey all

I have a quick route question for those that backpack in CA.

I am planning a trip for this summer, and am trying to figure out if its doable to hike over the pass between Anne Lake into Upper Graveyard Lakes. This is just north of Lake Thomas Edison. I am wondering if its possible to hike over that without any major obstacles? And if it is, could dogs get over it, or is it all massive boulder hopping?

Does anyone have any hiking experience in that area? Any help or advice would be awesome!

Thanks!!

I've been from Graveyard Lakes to Graveyard Peak, and it was rough enough. I think it would be unkind to take a dog up there and to try to make it over to Anne Lake.

I know that it would be fun to have your four-pawed buddy along in some places, but probably not on this route.

Ya, Graveyard Peak looks pretty rough on the map. But from Anne to Graveyard lakes is only 0.5 miles and the elevation change doesn't look horrible. Anne Lake is 10200, the pass goes up to 10900 and then back down to 10400 at Upper Graveyard Lakes.

I have no personal experience in that specific area so I can't comment directly. But the saddle east of Point 11125 is much less steep and looks more appealing on the satellite photo.

That's the one I was talking about. Again, I haven't been there, it just looks like a better option from looking at the topo map.

I was up in that area a couple years ago. You can go off-trail over that saddle – I've read descriptions from one couple who had done it. Here are two pictures – one looking up toward the saddle and a second that shows the vantage point of the first (it's on a ledge above the north side of the uppermost and largest Graveyard Lake:

View of saddle in Silver Divide (Graveyard Lk side)

Upper Graveyard Lake from above north shore.

(You can ignore the handsome fellow in the second pic)

I didn't attempt it myself, but from the Graveyard Lakes side, it is a bit of a scramble but very do-able. The other side apparently includes a sh&*load of talus slope. So not big boulders, but a difficult surface for hiking.

I did go the long way around (over Goodale Pass), but I only had time to see the NE shores of Peter Pande and Olive Lakes

Thanks for the post, and the pictures! it looks pretty doable, and from your description and pictures, maybe even doable for the K9 companions comming along.
