I've been creating my own (freezer bag) freeze dried meals the past couple of years, but they've started to suck so I'm thinking of going back to prepared meals. I'm looking for advice on which brand and type of prepared meals folks are enjoying. My focus is on the single serving size. From what I've found so far, it seems that Packit Gourmet and Wise Foods might be good candidates.

Thanks

MaryJanesFarms is the best! You can buy in bulk and make your own meals or buy their premade packages. 100% organic and the bags are paper, so if fire is permitted, you can burn your trash.

Buy direct or REI dividend!!!

You made your own freeze dried meals? Or did you just make dehydrated? Freeze drying seems like a lot of work.

+1 for Packit Gourmet. Not the lightest, and I'm always ravenous when hiking, but man, the tortilla soup is amazing. Loved most everything I've tried.

Thanks for your responses. Glen S., yes I probably meant dehydrated.

All of the brands mentioned above are dehydrated meals not freeze dried. Freeze dried products are those from Mountain House, Backpackers Pantry etc.

+1 for PackIt Gourmet! The chicken gumbo is really one of the best in my mind. Kinda hard to believe it's a dehydrated meal after you get it all together.

For me Pack It Gourmet is the best I have come across.

I'm a big fan of PackIt. I like their tortilla soup so much I will have it for lunch at home sometimes.

I have also ordered bulk ingredients from them and put together my own freeze dried meals.

Apart from the tortilla soup, are there any other recommendations?

Tuscan beef stew. The only problem with this one is that it only comes as a 2 serving meal.

The Southwest Black Bean and Corn Salad is way better than it sounds. And no hot water required.

The Texas State Fair Chili is really good. I added additional cheese that I already had (it comes with a small amount).

I like the burrito mix. I either order with the chicken or add my own meat.

The spaghetti is pretty good.

And I always make sure I have Ramen Rescue. It really does make ramen a whole lot better.

Another staple is the salsa.

If you don't mind carrying a skillet and spatula you can actually make bread. My wife loved this bread.

The food from Packit Gourmet was a large part of my wife enjoying her first real backpacking trip. She is very picky about her food, and she loved the PIG!

Edit: And of course the Tortilla Soup. That was the first thing we tried. I take it every time!

The gumbo is my favorite.

As mentioned the tortilla soup is fantastic.

I like the kickin chicken wrap though I have gotten to where I eat it without the tortillas. It's kind of like a spicy chicken salad. One plus for it too is that it only requires 5 oz of water so it is great for dry camping on ridges.

Dave,

Burger wraps and Texas State fair chili are my favourite.

I like PackItGourmet just as much as the next, but the big bummer is the fact that you cannot buy in bulk and they almost never have any sales or discounts.

Having said that, the jump start smoothies are my go-to.
